Basic or applied science - Which one is good?!

Hello Everyone,

Good that we have a blog for discussions in science.

Let me just start off the blog by putting the question as to what is the distinction between basic and applied science. Well, I can tell you thousands of examples to say that there's nothing like basic and applied in science. It is just science. But I was just very impressed by the example that I came across in YouTube. It's a lecture given by 2005 Economics Nobel laureate Prof.Aumann. It is a very simple yet an interesting short lecture. Just have a look at the video here...

Dear friends,

Dear friends,

It is very inspiring talk for researchers like us. As Prof Robert said there is no division in science (like Basic and Applied).Government funding agency for science also should understand that and should support financially for innovative science. Some findings which is not applicable right now but, it may lead to breakthrough in science and applied in future.

dear friends,
It is very useful lecture.I am agreeing that there is nothing like basic and applied science. In terms they can be defined that the basic science is motivation by curiosity and the applied science is designed to answer specific question. After all who can say in advance what is applicable? with respect to ganesh sir's post, government have a responsibility to fund the basic science and generally applied science is left to the industry.
